The Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal Protection, and Nature Conservation (NLWKN) commissioned the multipurpose vessel Ronja Ruteplate to strengthen its capabilities for environmental protection and maritime emergency response. Among its primary tasks is the recovery of oil from ships in distress, requiring a propulsion system capable of delivering precise maneuverability while meeting increasingly stringent environmental regulations.

The vessel was constructed by SET Shipyard, which selected Baumüller to provide the diesel-electric propulsion system based on its experience in hybrid and fully electric marine propulsion technologies.

Hybrid Propulsion Balances Performance and Emissions
To meet operational and environmental objectives, the vessel was equipped with a serial hybrid propulsion system. Three diesel engines supply electrical power through generators, while two 375 kW electric motors drive the propellers.

An integrated battery system complements the propulsion architecture by enabling low-emission operation in inland waterways and environmentally sensitive port areas. The combination of multiple energy sources provides flexibility for different operating conditions while supporting efficient vessel control.

According to Baumüller, the propulsion system enables rapid response and precise maneuvering, characteristics that are particularly important during pollution control operations and other specialized maritime tasks.

Flexible Energy Architecture Supports Diverse Missions
The hybrid propulsion concept allows the vessel to adapt its energy source according to operational requirements. Diesel generators provide power for demanding missions, while battery-supported operation reduces emissions during low-speed or environmentally sensitive activities.

This system integration helps balance operational reliability with environmental performance, allowing the vessel to perform a wide range of maritime service tasks without relying exclusively on conventional propulsion methods.

Environmental Certification Recognizes Low-Emission Operation
The propulsion system installed aboard Ronja Ruteplate received the Blue Angel environmental certification, recognizing its contribution to reduced emissions and environmentally responsible vessel operation.

Rather than relying on a single propulsion technology, the combination of diesel generation, electric propulsion and battery storage provides operational flexibility while supporting compliance with stricter environmental standards for marine vessels.

Proven Marine Electrification Experience
Baumüller Anlagen-Systemtechnik supported the project with its marine propulsion expertise developed through previous hybrid and fully electric vessel projects, including workboats, tugboats, inland waterway vessels and yachts.

Its portfolio covers the complete propulsion system, including electric motors, inverters, control systems, charging infrastructure, power management, DC-grid energy distribution, battery management and diagnostic software. This integrated approach enables propulsion systems to be tailored to the operational requirements of individual vessels.
