Strategic Move to Scale Storage and Handling Capabilities
Rheinmetall has announced the acquisition of Muni Berka GmbH, a specialist in ammunition storage and disassembly with sites in Dietersdorf and Ochtrup in Germany. The takeover significantly increases Rheinmetall’s own storage capacity, a requirement driven by the group’s rapidly expanding production of ammunition and energetic components. The transaction, subject to regulatory approvals, adds infrastructure that can be used immediately without additional investment, enabling faster operational scaling across the company’s munitions portfolio.
Supporting Disposal, Recycling and Research Across the Explosives Lifecycle
Beyond storage expansion, the acquisition enhances Rheinmetall’s access to capabilities for the disposal and recycling of explosives, as well as expertise in fuses, pyrotechnics and energetic materials research. Integrating these competencies strengthens the group’s ability to manage the full lifecycle of ammunition while supporting ongoing development activities tied to new production programmes across Europe.
Enabling Higher Output and Securing Long-Term Supply
The additional infrastructure allows Rheinmetall to permanently store more than one million 155 mm projectiles or half a million complete 155 mm full shots. This increase is directly connected to the company’s new site in Unterlüß, where up to 350,000 artillery shells per year are expected to be produced. The expansion supports Germany’s broader objective of reinforcing domestic value creation and ensuring reliable access to critical defence materiel.
With production sites in Spain gained through the 2023 Expal Munitions acquisition, Rheinmetall is building an integrated European network capable of supplying up to 1.5 million artillery projectiles annually by 2030. The newly acquired German facilities fit seamlessly into this structure, offering immediate storage options even for munitions manufactured abroad.

The acquisition marks another step in Rheinmetall’s long-term strategy to reinforce supply resilience for Germany and partner nations. By expanding storage, handling and lifecycle-management capacities, the company supports higher production throughput and improves readiness across the European defence ecosystem at a time of rising demand for artillery ammunition and energetic materials.
