Rheinmetall Advances UK’s MLRS A2 Upgrade with New Trailblazer Vision System

Enhanced Situational Awareness for the UK’s M270 A2 Platform
Rheinmetall UK has been awarded a contract by the NATO Support & Procurement Agency (NSPA) to supply its Trailblazer driver-vision and local-situation-awareness system for the British Army’s M270 A2 Multiple Launch Rocket System upgrade. Prototype systems are planned for early 2026, with full-rate production beginning later that year. The contract value is in the mid–single-digit million-euro range.

Trailblazer will become the 17th military platform to adopt this UK-developed technology, already fielded across seven user nations. The UK programme tasks Rheinmetall with designing and delivering a vision solution tailored to the specific needs of the MLRS A2 chassis.

A Mature System Designed for Fleet Standardisation
Trailblazer is a software-defined, SIL-2-certified system currently integrated into the Boxer mechanised infantry vehicle, Challenger 3 main battle tank and Warrior infantry fighting vehicle. Its adoption on the MLRS A2 supports greater commonality across the British combat vehicle fleet, simplifying training, maintenance and integration workflows.

Supplied equipment includes driver-vision sensors, thermal and fused-imaging modules, remote side and rear sensors, reinforced cabling, protective housings, and the installation kits required for platform-level integration.

Improved Visibility for Complex Operational Environments
The system enhances manoeuvrability by extending the crew’s field of view beyond the visible spectrum. High-performance daylight, thermal and fusion channels enable effective driving and situational assessment in low-light, obscured or poor-weather conditions.

Trailblazer features low-latency imaging to support terrain navigation, obstacle avoidance, safe-route selection and improved threat detection. Compliance with SIL-2, (N)GVA and DEF STAN 00-82 video standards ensures safe operation and straightforward integration into modern digital vehicle architectures.

Richard Streeter, Managing Director of Rheinmetall Electronics UK, noted that the award reinforces Trailblazer’s position as the preferred driver-vision system for the British Army, highlighting its reliability and technological maturity.
