Reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions remains a technical priority for the maritime sector as environmental regulations continue to tighten across global shipping. In this context, Fives and Avantis signed a cooperation agreement to deploy DeNOx retrofit solutions for marine boiler systems.

Retrofitting existing vessels as a near-term emissions pathway
The collaboration focuses on upgrading combustion and boiler systems on vessels already in operation, including ships operated by a major international oil and gas company. As most vessels currently in service are expected to remain operational for decades, retrofit strategies are considered a practical method to reduce emissions without full vessel replacement.

Within the partnership, Fives is responsible for developing a customised high-performance burner incorporating DeNOx technology. This work builds on combustion expertise from its subsidiary Fives Pillard and testing conducted at the Fives European Combustion Centre.

Avantis is responsible for onboard integration and installation, applying its experience in marine emission control retrofits and boiler services. The deployment approach is intended to limit operational disruption during installation.

Industrial combustion technology adapted for maritime use
The DeNOx solution is based on technology previously deployed in industrial combustion environments and adapted for maritime applications. The design allows integration across different vessel classes and boiler configurations without requiring major redesign of existing systems.

The retrofit approach is intended to provide a scalable method for reducing NOx emissions across fleets, particularly where operators need to align with environmental compliance requirements while maintaining vessel availability.

Operational considerations beyond regulatory compliance
The retrofit programme is also intended to address operational constraints associated with vessel upgrades. Key technical and operational considerations include reducing capital and operating expenditure impacts, limiting vessel downtime during installation and enabling fleet-wide deployment.

The approach also supports longer-term decarbonisation strategies by enabling incremental emissions reductions within existing assets rather than relying solely on new vessel construction.

Expanding marine applications of DeNOx combustion systems
The cooperation marks an extension of Fives’ combustion technologies into marine applications, including the first maritime deployments of the Pillard DeNOx system. The project also reflects Avantis’ focus on emissions control retrofits and decarbonisation programmes across operating fleets.

The collaboration illustrates a broader trend toward applying proven industrial emissions-reduction technologies to maritime engineering as ship operators seek practical pathways to reduce environmental impact while maintaining operational continuity.
