German Navy advances laser weapon system development

Germany's Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) has awarded a development contract for a high-energy laser weapon system intended for the German Navy. The project combines the expertise of Rheinmetall Waffe Munition and MBDA Deutschland through the High-Energy Laser Naval Demonstrator Working Group (ARGE HEL) to deliver an integrated maritime defence system.
Integrated maritime defence capability
The contract, signed on 9 July 2026, covers the development of a complete laser weapon system designed for naval operations. The programme has a contract value in the mid three-digit million-euro range and includes the entire engagement chain, from target detection and tracking to laser-based target engagement.
Rheinmetall Waffe Munition and MBDA Deutschland are establishing a joint venture to execute the programme. According to the companies, development will prioritise German supply chains and domestic engineering capabilities to support national expertise in laser defence technologies. The system is scheduled to enter operational service by 2029.
System development and testing
The laser weapon system has been developed to meet the operational requirements of the Bundeswehr. During demonstrations conducted in March 2026 at the Bundeswehr Technical Centre for Weapons and Ammunition (WTD 91) in Meppen, the naval laser demonstrator underwent evaluations before senior German defence representatives.
The demonstrator has accumulated approximately 28,000 nautical miles of sea trials aboard the frigate SACHSEN, operating in the North Sea, Baltic Sea and Mediterranean. According to the project information, the system maintained operational performance under varying weather conditions.
Testing conducted over more than one year included over 1,000 successful engagements against airborne, maritime and land-based targets.
Laser weapon technology
The system integrates reconnaissance, target tracking and laser engagement into a single platform. Improvements in beam quality and tracking accuracy enable the laser energy to remain focused on a target area measuring only a few centimetres, including moving targets.
By concentrating energy within a small impact area, the system achieves high energy density while requiring comparatively lower laser power. This approach is intended to improve engagement speed, targeting precision and overall system efficiency against a range of threats, including unmanned aerial systems and other airborne, maritime and land-based targets.
Operational outlook
The programme represents Germany's continued investment in directed-energy defence technologies for naval applications. Following successful demonstrator trials, the development phase aims to deliver an operational laser weapon capability integrated into future German naval defence systems by 2029.
