MAN Engines has introduced the MAN i6X, a 12.4-liter in-line six-cylinder engine generation designed for yachts and sport fishing boats. The platform expands the company's marine propulsion range into the upper power spectrum with output ratings up to 1,000 hp (735 kW).
Platform Architecture and Single-Turbocharger Concept
The MAN i6X is built on the MAN D2676 technical platform, originally introduced in 2015 for workboats and yacht applications. The engine shares a high proportion of common components with the existing MAN i6 series, maintaining established structural designs and service logics.
A primary technical development in the MAN i6X is a newly developed single-stage turbocharging architecture utilizing one turbocharger. While comparable power outputs in this class frequently use multi-stage charging systems, the single-turbocharger configuration is designed to reduce system complexity and overall weight while maintaining engine dynamic response.

The engine generation introduces two new power ratings: a top output variant delivering 1,000 hp (735 kW) and a second variant rated at 900 hp (662 kW). These models complement existing MAN i6 engine variants rated at 730 hp (537 kW), 800 hp (588 kW), and 850 hp (625 kW).
The engine delivers a maximum torque of 3,250 Nm, with an emphasis on rapid torque availability during low-speed acceleration and maneuvering. The design achieves a power-to-weight ratio of 0.8 hp/kg (~0.6 kW/kg) across its 12.4-liter displacement.
Werner Kübler, Head of Engineering at MAN Engines, noted that further developing the D26 platform combines higher power density and dynamic response with lower specific fuel consumption compared to predecessor variants.
Thermal Management, Dimensions, and Regulatory Compliance
The engine incorporates upgraded functional systems to support operation under higher load profiles. Technical modifications include a redesigned charging system, an advanced intercooling system, and an expanded, demand-driven oil cooling system designed to maintain thermal stability under continuous heavy loads.
The MAN i6X retains almost identical external dimensions and customer interfaces to the existing MAN i6 series, allowing integration into existing hull designs. The propulsion system is compliant with international emissions regulations, including IMO Tier II, US EPA Tier III, and EU Recreational Craft Directive 2013/53/EU.
Tradeshow Presentation and Commercial Availability
MAN Engines will present the MAN i6X at the Cannes Yachting Festival from September 8 to 13, 2026, at the MAN Engines display located at the Vieux Port, Jetée Nord, Jetée 193, in Cannes, France. The engine generation will be commercially available as standard starting in the first quarter of 2028.
