Autonomous Undersea Systems Deployment for Maritime Defense Infrastructure

General Dynamics Mission Systems has finalized a 230 million USD contract modification with the U.S. Navy to deliver encapsulated effector systems designed for intermediate and deep-water maritime applications. The collaboration focuses on integrating autonomous weapon delivery into existing naval digital infrastructure and maritime operational frameworks.

Operational Requirements and Technical Scope
The joint effort addresses operational complexity in contested undersea environments, where deep-water acoustic sensing and targeted effector delivery are necessary to secure maritime domains. Autonomous deployment requires specialized hardware capable of extended submersion and reliable command processing across surface and subsurface operational interfaces.

Under this framework, the U.S. Navy Portfolio Acquisition Executive (PAE) Maritime directs procurement specifications and system integration standards. General Dynamics Mission Systems serves as the prime industrial partner, responsible for full system manufacturing, systems engineering, and precision component assembly.

Production Architecture and Facility Allocation
Primary production of the encapsulated effector units is assigned to the General Dynamics UUV Manufacturing and Assembly Center of Excellence, a 500,000-square-foot site located in Taunton, Massachusetts. This facility utilizes specialized manufacturing cells and automated diagnostic test systems designed for unmanned underwater vehicles. Additional component fabrication and supply-chain support are provided by the organization's facility in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The manufacturing process incorporates standardized acoustic testing protocols to ensure system survivability and signal fidelity under high hydrostatic pressure conditions. Integration of specialized fabrication equipment supports modular scaling for long-term production requirements.

Implementation Schedule and Industrial Capacity
System production is structured to continue through late 2028. To execute the industrial volume specified under the agreement, staffing across engineering, fabrication, and quality assurance divisions is expanding by 30 full-time roles, establishing an operational program team of over 100 technical personnel distributed across Massachusetts and North Carolina.

The standardized deployment processes established through this industrial capacity allow naval units to maintain repeatable operational parameters for intermediate- and deep-depth maritime deterrence configurations.
