Advanced airborne intelligence applications in military surveillance, electronic reconnaissance, and signals intelligence (SIGINT) require highly specialized aircraft and integrated systems. The PEGASUS programme, a collaboration between HENSOLDT, Lufthansa Technik Defense, and Bombardier Defense, has reached a key milestone with the arrival of the first aircraft in Hamburg, Germany. After its transatlantic flight from Bombardier’s facility in Wichita, Kansas, the aircraft now enters the mission system integration and certification phase.
Transition from Design to System Integration
HENSOLDT, acting as general contractor, leads the overall PEGASUS programme, encompassing the airborne platform, mission systems, ground station, training facilities, and data analysis capabilities. Lufthansa Technik Defense, as the prime subcontractor, is responsible for procuring and modifying the aircraft, integrating the SIGINT system, and managing civil and military certification. Bombardier Defense provides the high-performance Global 6000 platform and supports the programme with engineering and flight-testing expertise.
The aircraft’s arrival in Hamburg marks the transition from platform design and development in the United States to the integration of HENSOLDT’s Kalaetron Integral SIGINT system, installation of the mission cabin, and incorporation of additional military and communication systems.
Preparing for Operational Deployment
Parallel to system integration, preparations for entry-into-service support are underway. This includes technical and flight personnel training, development and provision of technical documentation, and validation of mission system performance. These steps ensure a smooth transition from integration to operational use, providing the German Armed Forces with a cutting-edge airborne intelligence capability.
Advanced Airborne Intelligence Platform
The PEGASUS programme combines HENSOLDT’s expertise in electromagnetic warfare and SIGINT systems with Lufthansa Technik’s capabilities in special mission aircraft modification and Bombardier’s high-performance Global 6000 platform. This integrated approach delivers one of the most advanced airborne intelligence platforms currently in development, optimized for operational flexibility, reliability, and mission performance in the SIGINT domain.
