Tranche 3 satellite scope and programme context
L3Harris Technologies has been awarded a contract valued at up to $843 million by the Space Development Agency to deliver 18 infrared satellites for the Tranche 3 Tracking Layer. The contract scope includes satellite production as well as associated ground software, operational support, and sustainment activities.
The satellites will become part of the Tracking Layer within the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture, a low Earth orbit constellation intended to provide persistent global sensing and tracking of advanced missile threats, including hypersonic vehicles.
Infrared sensing and on-orbit processing
The Tranche 3 Tracking Layer satellites are designed to provide higher-resolution infrared sensing than earlier tranches, enabling improved detection and tracking performance against fast, manoeuvring targets. In addition to sensor upgrades, the satellites incorporate on-orbit data processing and real-time detection algorithms, reducing latency between detection and dissemination of tracking data.
These capabilities are intended to support continuous missile tracking across broader geographic coverage, with data integrated directly into the wider PWSA network for distribution to operational users.
Integration within the proliferated architecture
Once deployed, the satellites will integrate with the existing Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture, expanding both sensor density and tracking persistence. The proliferated design relies on multiple satellites operating as a network rather than a small number of high-value assets, improving resilience and coverage.
The Tranche 3 layer builds on earlier deployments by increasing sensor performance and onboard processing capability while maintaining compatibility with existing PWSA communications and data-sharing frameworks.
Continuity across tracking tranches
L3Harris is already supporting the Tracking Layer across previous phases of the programme. Four missile-tracking satellites are currently on orbit under Tranche 0, with an additional 34 satellites in development across Tranche 1 and Tranche 2. This continuity allows incremental performance improvements to be introduced while preserving architectural consistency across tranches.
Relevance for missile defence operations
Space-based infrared tracking is a foundational element of modern missile defence architectures, particularly for hypersonic threats that challenge traditional radar-based systems. By combining higher-resolution sensors with onboard processing and low-latency data distribution, the Tranche 3 Tracking Layer is intended to improve early warning, tracking accuracy, and handoff to downstream defence systems.
