MBDA Secures German Order for Additional Meteor Air-to-Air Missiles

MBDA has been awarded a contract to deliver additional Meteor beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles (BVRAAM) to the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr), extending an existing procurement framework that positions Meteor among the most advanced air-to-air weapon systems in service today.

Continued Investment in Next-Generation Air Superiority
The contract was issued by the Meteor Integrated Joint Programme Office (IJPO) on behalf of the German Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw), building on previous orders under the multinational Meteor programme. This procurement supports Germany’s long-term strategy to sustain and modernise its fighter fleet’s long-range engagement capabilities.

Meteor is designed to engage highly manoeuvrable targets at ranges that exceed those achievable by conventional medium-range air-to-air missiles, enabled by a sustained thrust propulsion system that enhances intercept performance throughout the missile’s flight envelope.

Technology Differentiation: Ramjet Propulsion and “No Escape Zone”
At the core of Meteor’s performance is its solid-fuel, variable-flow ramjet engine, produced in Germany by MBDA subsidiary Bayern-Chemie. Unlike traditional rocket motors that burn out shortly after launch, Meteor’s ramjet maintains propulsion to the point of engagement. This capability generates an extended “No Escape Zone”—the region within which a target cannot evade interception—which is larger than that of many competing BVRAAMs.

Meteor’s active radar seeker combined with a two-way data link enables dynamic mid-course updates, including retargeting based on updated sensor data, which enhances effectiveness in complex electronic warfare environments. The missile also incorporates both proximity and impact fuzing to optimise lethality against diverse aerial threats.

Operational Integration and International Use
Meteor equips a range of combat aircraft across Europe and beyond, including the Eurofighter Typhoon, Dassault Rafale, and Saab JAS 39 Gripen, and is being integrated on additional platforms such as the F-35 variant family and South Korea’s KF-21. Its integration on multiple airframes reflects interoperability benefits for nations operating mixed fleets.

In 2025, integration activities advanced on the F-35 programme, including the first flight of Meteor on the F-35B and preparatory ground tests for the F-35A. A successful live firing from the Brazilian Air Force’s Gripen fighters demonstrated operational performance in diverse defence contexts.

Strategic Context and Competitive Position
The additional order from Germany underscores sustained confidence in Meteor relative to competing air-to-air missile systems. Whereas many current missiles rely on unpowered flight phases that limit range and closure speeds at long distances, Meteor’s throttleable ramjet maintains high kinematic performance throughout the engagement. According to public defence analyses, this results in a high-energy intercept profile and a substantial no-escape zone, distinguishing Meteor from contemporary Western missiles such as the AIM-120 AMRAAM family.

By deepening its inventory of Meteor missiles, Germany reinforces not only national air defence capabilities but also interoperability with partner nations that share the platform and doctrine for long-range air combat, contributing to a collective European defence posture.
