To address the escalating asymmetric threat posed by low-cost uncrewed aerial systems (UAS), Rheinmetall has partnered with Australian technology firm Praetorian Aeronautics to unveil AERIE (Autonomous-Engagement-Rapid-Interceptor-Effector). Developed from initial concept to a working prototype in just 12 months, this collaborative Counter-UAS (C-UAS) solution provides a self-sustained, highly mobile defense mechanism designed to rapidly intercept and neutralize emerging global drone threats across multiple domains.

Containerised deployment and kinetic interception
Designed for maximum tactical mobility, the AERIE system is housed entirely within a standard 20-foot ISO shipping container. This self-contained, interceptor-agnostic launcher can hold over 20 interceptors, enabling rapid deployment, operation, and reloading in forward-operating environments. The current demonstrator utilizes Praetorian Aeronautics’ Arrow Interceptor—an autonomous, high-speed, low-cost effector specifically engineered for the kinetic neutralization of multiple uncrewed system threat-types beyond visual range. This allows military units to counter inexpensive drone swarms without depleting high-value traditional surface-to-air missile stockpiles.

AI-enhanced command and control integration
At the core of the system’s operational capability is the Hadrian Command and Control (C2) architecture. Designed and developed in Australia, this AI-enhanced software platform manages autonomous effectors across air, land, and maritime environments. Brett Hill, CEO of Praetorian Aeronautics, noted that combining this unique C2 system with Rheinmetall’s global air defense engineering and manufacturing capabilities has yielded a highly advanced sovereign defense solution. According to Nathan Poyner, Managing Director of Rheinmetall Defence Australia, the system reflects a shared commitment to rapid technology development. The AERIE system is scheduled to undergo full operator demonstrations in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Additional Context: Containerized architecture in asymmetric air defense
As asymmetric drone warfare proliferates, the ability to quickly deploy Counter-Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (C-UAS) to forward operating bases or critical civilian infrastructure has become a paramount military requirement. Packaging a C-UAS inside a standard 20-foot ISO shipping container allows the entire defense battery—including launch tubes, power supplies, and command and control (C2) servers—to be transported via standard commercial logistics, such as flatbed trucks or tactical airlift. Once on site, these self-contained modules can be rendered operational in a fraction of the time required for traditional fixed-site air defense installations. Furthermore, utilizing low-cost "hit-to-kill" kinetic interceptors provides an economically sustainable response to saturation attacks, neutralizing inexpensive commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) drones through physical collision rather than relying on easily spoofed electronic warfare (EW) jamming techniques.
