Joint Flight Testing for Two-Seat Supersonic Fighter Aircraft
Saab and Brazilian partners initiate flight test campaigns to validate dual-cockpit systems for advanced combat operations and tactical pilot training.

Saab and the Brazilian Air Force have commenced the airborne flight test phase for the two-seat Gripen F multirole fighter in Linköping, Sweden. This bilateral aerospace cooperation focuses on validating dual-cockpit systems, advanced digital infrastructure, and aerodynamic parameters for military aviation applications.
Bilateral Development and Technology Transfer
The two-seat variant is the outcome of a bilateral cooperation framework between Sweden and Brazil focused on shared engineering, technology transfer, and joint industrial participation. More than 350 Brazilian engineers, technicians, and military pilots engaged in development, production, and maintenance training in Sweden. As the launch customer, the Brazilian Air Force participated directly in the co-development process to address specific pilot training and tactical operational requirements.
System Verification and Test Campaign Phases
The initial 40-minute flight was conducted by joint test pilots from Saab and the Brazilian Air Force to evaluate baseline avionics, core subsystems, and fundamental flight performance. Following initial production acceptance, testing shifts to progressive flight envelope expansion. This phase systematically validates technical limits across key parameters:
- Maximum velocity and operational altitude limits
- Structural load factors (G-load limits)
- High angle of attack handling qualities
- Rear-cockpit mission displays, tactical integration, and flight-control interfaces
Operational Deployment and Implementation
The dual-cockpit configuration enables accelerated pilot transition training while providing an operational layout for complex mission environments where crew task-sharing improves situational awareness. All ongoing testing, envelope validation, and systems integration will proceed at the Saab Flight Test Centre. Upon completion of formal flight acceptance procedures, serial aircraft will be prepared for operational deployment with the Brazilian Air Force.
